Thai Railways connect with the Malaysian Railway System at two points on the Southern Thai border, Padang Besar and Sungai Kolok. At Padang Besar, the Thai Railways System connects with Malaysian Railways Singapore Line and runs down peninsular Malaysia. It's possible to take the train all the way through from Bangkok to Singapore, but connections are not well-coordinated, and it's not possible to make reservations for Malaysian trains within Thailand. There's a good possibility of missing your connecting train service in Kuala Lumpur, or not getting a sleeping berth, although you paid for it. Fortunately, you can get refunds at Singapore Station easily.
The State Railways of Thailand also has organized several types of 'combination' tickets. This eliminates the risk of missing a connecting travel service and 'Getting Stuck' somewhere, or having unreasonable waits between services. Joint train / bus / boat tickets are available from Bangkok to popular destinations like Phuket, Krabi, Ko Samui Chiang Rai, and Phi Phi Island. In addition, all North / Northeast-bound trains make a stop at a small station opposite Bangkok's Don Muang Airport (50 minutes from central Bangkok), for convenient air / rail connections to those destinations, or to avoid Central Bangkok altogether.
