Malaysia & Singapore Train Lines

Thai Railways connects with the Malaysian Railway System at two points on the Thai / Malay Border, Padang Besar and Sungai Kolok. The only passenger train service connections are via Padang Besar. Thai Railways connects with Malaysian Railways' Singapore Line at Padang Besar and goes down Peninsular Malaysia to Singapore. It's possible to take the train all the way through from Bangkok to Singapore, but connections are not well-coordinated, and it's not possible to make reservations for Malaysian trains within Thailand. There's a good possibility of missing your connecting train service in Kuala Lumpur, or not getting a sleeping berth, although you paid for it. Fortunately, you can get refunds at Singapore Station easily.

Thai Railways ' Interantional Express' has Daily Overnight Service direct from Bangkok's Hualamphong Rail Station to Butterworth (Malaysia) using Thai Railways Southern Line. On most other Thai Railways International Services, passengers have to get out at Hat Yai Station and transfer to a Malaysian Railways Trains (Keretapi Tanah Melayu / KTMB) . Malaysian Railways' 'Senandung Langkawi' departs from Hat Yai Station and goes South of the Border to Butterworth and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). From Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, there are comfortable Overnight Malaysian Railways Sleeper Services misnamed 'Daytime Express Trains'. Malaysian Railways runs all the train services except two between Hat Yai (Thailand), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and Singapore: Thai Railways ' Interantional Express' to Butterworth (Malaysia), and 'The Eastern & Oriental Express' to Singapore.

On Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur Train Service, there is a Thai Railways Surcharge for taking a bicycle aboard trains to the Thai / Malay Border and another small Malaysian Railways freight charge for the trip between the Thai / Malay Border to Butterworth.

Both Malaysia and Singapore Immigration Checkpoints were inside Tanjong Pagar Railway Station until 1998. In 1998, Singapore moved its checkpoint to Woodlands Rail Station (30 minutes farther towards Malaysia), but Malaysian Immigration refused to move. Malay Immigration Staff still 'scan' but do not 'stamp' passports at Tanjong Pagar Station for entry into Malaysia. Then passengers go on to the Singapore Immigration Checkpoint at Woodlands Rail Station for a Singapore "Exit Stamp'. You will never get a Malaysian 'Entry Stamp' if you enter Malaysia by train from Singapore. When coming from Malaysia into Singapore, Malaysian Immigration Staff 'stamp' passports on board trains in Johor Baru. The Trains then continue to Woodlands Station and Singapore Immigration Checkpoint. At Woodlands Rail Station, you will have to get off the train to walk through immigration. The invaluable and direct luxury service taking wealthy passengers between Singapore's Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and Hua Lamphong Station, Bangkok. It stops at Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station, Butterworth and Kanchanaburi. It takes three days (two nights). There are Immigration Checkpoints inside Padang Besar Station (Thai / Malay Border) and outside Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (Malay / Singapore Border).
